The Human Life Guild

The Human Life Guild falls under the umbrella of the Office of Life and Family Ministry. The purpose of the HUman Life Guild is to encourage membership of those who are willing to accept the invitation to be “People of Life,” to have an unconditional commitment to human life and to be willing to promote and defend human life at every stage, in every condition, through thought, word, deed and prayer.

The Diocese of Providence will maintain a mailing list of those who have joined the Human Life Guild and will, from time to time, share information with them and invite their participation in various pro-life activities, programs and liturgies. The Guild has an open membership with a steering committee and spiritual director appointed by the Bishop. There are four major areas of the Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities, under which the Human Life Guild is implemented, as instituted by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops:

• Education: Programs are offered to deepen understanding of the sanctity of human life and the humanity of unborn children, the moral evil of intentionally killing innocent human beings – whether at the beginning of life or at its end – and the mission of the Church to witness to and serve all human life.
• Pastoral Care: Efforts are implemented to help women with problems related to pregnancy through the Gabriel Project and for all who have been involved with abortion through Project Rachel, Rachel’s Vineyard Retreats and Healing a Wounded Heart Post-Abortion Support Group.
• Public Policy: Efforts are directed to restoring legal protection to the lives of unborn children and those vulnerable to pressures to end their lives by assisted suicide, and to providing morally acceptable alternatives to abortion and assisted suicide through Faith in Action, the diocesan legislative network.
• Prayer: Efforts are directed to participation in the sacramental life of the Church and in programs of communal and individual prayer, that the culture of death that surrounds us today will be replaced by a Culture of Life and Love through the activities of the diocesan Office of Life and Family Ministry.
