Eighth Bishop of Burlington
Birthdate: August 3, 1930, Providence, Rhode Island, the son of Henry L. and Mae T. (Cooney) Angell.
Died: October 4, 2016 in Burlington, Vermont.
Education: East Providence Public Elementary Schools; Our Lady of Providence High School and Seminary, Warwick, Rhode Island; St. Mary’s Seminary, Baltimore, Maryland.
Ordination to the Priesthood: May 26, 1957 at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Providence, Rhode Island. Engaged in parish ministry as parochial vicar at St. Mark, Jamestown, Rhode Island; Sacred Heart, Pawtucket, Rhode Island; as Assistant Pastor at St. Mary, Newport, Rhode Island; and as Pastor of St. John Parish in Providence, Rhode Island.
Engaged in diocesan ministry as Assistant Chancellor and Secretary to the Most Reverend Russell J. McVinney, late Bishop of Providence, Rhode Island, 1968-1972. Served as Chancellor to Bishop Louis E. Gelineau April 26, 1972-1974. Invested as Prelate of Honor to His Holiness Pope Paul VI, December 17, 1972. Appointed Vicar General of the Diocese of Providence, August 30, 1974.
Ordination to the Episcopacy: Elevated to Episcopate as Titular Bishop of Settimunicia and Auxiliary Bishop to the Bishop of Providence on August 13, 1974. Ordained by the Most Reverend Louis E. Gelineau at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence, Rhode Island, on October 7, 1974.
Installed Eighth Bishop of Burlington on November 9, 1992. Resigned as Bishop on Nov. 9, 2005 at the age of 75. Years of episcopacy: 13 years as Bishop of Burlington.
