Our 150th Anniversary celebration continues - Bishop Thomas J. Tobin has presented the first awards in his Acts of Charity initiative during the 150th Anniversary celebration. The celebration commemorates the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Providence by recognizing groups of the diocesan family who have performed new or increased volunteer efforts during the celebration year.

PROVIDENCE — On December 2, a “Thanks and Blessings” breakfast was held in Providence for the staff who support Catholic Hospital Ministry in the Diocese of Providence. These individuals prepare the schedules of the numerous priests who assist with hospital ministry as well as coordinating visits within the hospitals for Catholic patients.
As it has from the beginning of the pandemic, the Diocese of Providence will continue to cooperate fully with state directives regarding the response to the pandemic.
PROVIDENCE — The Keep the Heat on Program for the Diocese of Providence has never experienced a heating season quite like this one before. So far this heating season, KTHO staff have already assisted 437 households compared to 183 at this time last year. Keep the Heat On has also provided more than $163,000 in assistance already this year.
PROVIDENCE — The 22-story climb to the top of the towers of the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul is at once daunting and enlightening. A skeletal stairwell, enclosed by black mesh fabric that provides some measure of dryness on rainy days, takes workers and visitors to places on the surrounding scaffolding where they can access the 132-year-old cathedral’s signature sandstone façade.

Father John G. Greaves, 90, Pastor Emeritus of the former St. Ann Parish, Cranston, died Tuesday, December 7, 2021. Visitation will be held at Saint Ann Church at Saint George Parish, 1493 Cranston Street, Cranston, on Tuesday, December 14, from 10 – 11am. A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for the repose of Father’s soul at Saint Ann Church on Tuesday, December 14, at 11am. Burial will follow in Saint Ann Cemetery, Cranston.

PROVIDENCE — The Vatican document signed by Pope Pius IX which created the Diocese of Providence in 1872, was placed on display and blessed by Bishop Thomas J. Tobin Sunday at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the diocese.
Father Joseph D. Santos, 62, a priest of the Archdiocese of Braga (Portugal) and long-time Administrator of Holy Name Parish, Providence, died on Saturday, December 4, 2021. Calling hours will be on Friday, December 10, from 4-7pm in Holy Name Church, 99 Camp Street, Providence. A Solemn Latin Mass of Requiem according to the 1962 Missal will be offered for the repose of Father’s soul on Saturday, December 11, at 10am at Holy Name Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Bristol.
Bishop Thomas J. Tobin visited the diocesan Emmanuel House homeless shelter on Thanksgiving to lead a short prayer service where he offered a blessing before helping to serve a traditional turkey dinner to the guests.
