The strong Category 4 storm ravaged Florida’s Southwest Coast and inland areas after coming ashore on Sept. 28, leaving more than 100 people dead in its wake and hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
Last year, we celebrated the 150th anniversary of our diocese with the theme “The Lord Has Done Great Things for Us; We are Filled with Joy” (Ps 126:3). Indeed, He has! We always have much for which we can be grateful, but this Thanksgiving, I am particularly grateful for the gift of Catholic education. If the numbers are correct, many Rhode Island families are grateful for the same thing. Data from the National Catholic Education Association tell us that nationwide, Catholic school enrollment grew by 3.8 percent in the 2021-2022 school year, the first such increase in twenty years.

PROVIDENCE — The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has welcomed the Vatican’s release of the document that will guide the next phase of the global Synod called for by Pope Francis.
In the last election abortion was on the ballot in several states. In many cases pro-life legislation failed to pass. For example, in Kentucky, which consistently votes Republican, an amendment to the U.S. Constitution denying the right to abortion in all cases failed to pass. Polling suggests that many Americans agree with having some restrictions on abortion, but not outright banning it.
One of the endearing qualities of Catholics is that we have great reverence and affection for our loved ones who have died. This is true throughout the year but especially in November, the month devoted to the faithful departed.
PROVIDENCE — St. Sebastian Parish welcomed its new pastor, Father Edward Sousa on Sunday, Oct. 16. Auxiliary Bishop Robert C. Evans celebrated Holy Mass at the church and officially installed Father Sousa as pastor.
“Simply put: No priest, no Eucharist,” said Father Christopher Murphy, the rector of Our Lady of Providence Seminary. “Christ established the priesthood and the Eucharist at the same time on Holy Thursday; they are inextricably linked.”
