EAST GREENWICH — On Wednesday, March 23, the Catholic author, columnist, and social critic George Weigel delivered a speech at Our Lady of Mercy Parish. Weigel’s presentation, titled “The Catholic Moment: The Church in the United States and the Redemption of American Democracy,” was held as a part of the 150th Anniversary celebrations for the Diocese of Providence.

The Catholic Charity Appeal is the principal means of support for numerous diocesan outreach ministries. In 2021, the diocese’s St. Martin de Porres Multi-Service Center was able to feed 350 families per week with the resources they received through the Appeal, while the Emmanuel House homeless shelter provided 16,000 bed nights for those with no place else to turn for help. The Office of Life and Family Ministry provided baby supplies and assistance to 1,700 individuals. The Appeal also provides annual support for various education programs each year....

Catholic Athletic League basketball in the Diocese of Providence completed its first full season since Covid-19 disrupted the 2019-2020 season with the completion of the Diocesan Tourney for Boys and Girls Parish and School Teams this past weekend, March 19 and 20. Over 55 teams comprised of student athletes ranging from grade 4 to grade 10 from the Diocese of Providence competed. Games were played over two weekends on the courts of LaSalle Academy, Mount Saint Charles Academy, Bishop Hendricken High School, The Prout School and Saint Raphael Academy.
