Multiple fast-moving wildfires are continuing to ravage the Los Angeles area. These fires have killed at least twenty-seven people, destroyed thousands of homes and structures and more than 180,000 people have evacuated. The Diocese of Providence is working with Catholic Charites USA (the official domestic relief agency of the U.S. Catholic Church) to direct donations to those in need. “A gift to the Appeal funds immediate assistance programs that aid those in desperate need of food, shelter and heating assistance, but it also builds up the Church in the areas of Evangelization, Catholic Education, Spiritual Formation and Ministerial Services,” said Tim McCaig, director of Stewardship and Development, noting that approximately 200,000 instances of service occur each year through Catholic Social Services.

Since it began in 2005, the program has continued to provide heating assistance to Rhode Islanders who have exhausted all other public and private forms of assistance. The Gregorian Concert Choir and Festival Orchestra will present a Concert entitled “The Sounds of the Season” at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence on Sunday, December 8 at 3 p.m. The Concert, featuring the music of Advent and Christmas, will benefit the Diocese of Providence “Keep the Heat On” Challenge which assists poor and low income families with utility expenses. Tickets for the Concert may be purchased by calling the Cathedral office at 401-331-2434. Tickets will also be available at the door on the day of the Concert.

Reverend D. Bryan Finerty, 89, Pastor Emeritus of the former St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Woonsocket, died recently in Punta Gorda, Florida (Diocese of Venice) where he had resided for many years. A Mass of Christian Burial for the repose of Father's soul will be offered in the Diocese of Venice (Sacred Heart Church) on Thursday, November 21, at 11 a.m. Visitation will begin in that church at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Charlotte Memorial Gardens, Punta Gorda.

Most Reverend Louis E. Gelineau, D.D., J.C.L., S.T.L., 96, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Providence, died Thursday, November 7, 2024. Bishop Gelineau served as the sixth Bishop of Providence for more than 25 years. His services will be this Saturday, November 16, from the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Providence.
