Lewandowski, C.Ss.R., newly announced as the 10th Bishop of Providence, celebrated Holy Mass at Noon in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Providence, on the day of his appointment. Archbishop Richard G. Henning and Bishop Thomas J. Tobin, Bishops Emeriti of Providence, and former Providence Auxiliary Bishop Robert C. Evans, concelebrated the Mass along with Monsignor Albert Kenney, Diocesan Administrator, along with other priests.

By now, you have seen the news that the Holy Father has appointed me the next Archbishop of Boston. Of course, I am grateful to the Holy Father for his confidence in me and for entrusting this ministry to me. I hope that you will all understand that the news of the appointment has left me with very mixed emotions and even a sense of grief to leave this beautiful Diocese of Providence.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has accepted the resignation of Most Reverend Thomas J. Tobin, D.D., from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Providence. As required by the Code of Canon Law, Bishop Tobin presented a letter of resignation to the Holy Father upon reaching the age of 75 on April 1.

It is very appropriate that we gather today, on the day before Thanksgiving – the day when we pause to recall and to thank Almighty God for all of the gifts and blessings which he has given us. Today we have another wonderful blessing for which to be grateful – the appointment of Bishop Richard Henning as the Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Providence.
