Bishop Bruce A. Lewandowski, C.Ss.R., newly announced as the 10th Bishop of Providence, celebrated Holy Mass at Noon in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Providence, on the day of his appointment. Archbishop Richard G. Henning and Bishop Thomas J. Tobin, Bishops Emeriti of Providence, and former Providence Auxiliary Bishop Robert C. Evans, concelebrated the Mass along with Monsignor Albert Kenney, Diocesan Administrator, along with other priests.

"It is with great joy we share that the Holy Father, Pope Francis, has appointed His Excellency, the Most Reverend Bruce Alan Lewandowski, C.Ss.R., as the tenth Bishop of Providence. Bishop Lewandowski is currently Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore where he serves as Vicar for Hispanic Catholics and Vicar for Baltimore City. Holy Father, Pope Francis, has appointed Most Reverend Bruce A. Lewandowski, C.Ss.R., until now Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore, as the tenth Bishop of Providence. The changes were publicized today in Washington, D.C. by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States.

By now, you have seen the news that the Holy Father has appointed me the next Archbishop of Boston. Of course, I am grateful to the Holy Father for his confidence in me and for entrusting this ministry to me. I hope that you will all understand that the news of the appointment has left me with very mixed emotions and even a sense of grief to leave this beautiful Diocese of Providence.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has appointed Most Reverend Richard G. Henning, S.T.D., currently the Bishop of Providence, as Archbishop of Boston. The appointment was publicized today in Washington, D.C. by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has accepted the resignation of Most Reverend Thomas J. Tobin, D.D., from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Providence. As required by the Code of Canon Law, Bishop Tobin presented a letter of resignation to the Holy Father upon reaching the age of 75 on April 1.

PROVIDENCE — In a glorious Mass of Reception at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul on Jan. 26, nine weeks after being appointed by Pope Francis to serve as coadjutor Bishop of Providence with the right of succession, Most Rev. Richard G. Henning, D.D., S.T.D., presented the papal bull, signed by the Holy Father, to Bishop Thomas J. Tobin, D.D., authenticating his appointment. Click for photos and more!
